Christmas Party in South Yarra

It was a cheery eighty of us as we gathered for our gala Christmas Party. The Royal South Yarra Tennis Club was our chosen venue again this year. The location could hardly have been better, with the pleasant Yarra parks just over the way, and Como Park a street away.

Our own Phillip Lambers and his attentive staff, had arranged the venue to perfection. Who amongst us did not admire the beautifully dressed tables, with Xmas decorations displayed in good taste? Many thanks again to Phil and his capable staff.

There was gossip and family stories a-plenty amongst us Rotarians, Partners and Guests, as we talked about plans for Christmas celebrations, and then holidays by the beach and up in the hills.

A spirited bidding for framed sketches by our own talented President Bill, fetched top prices. Congratulations to the successful bidders! Auctioneer and MC Peter Thomas assured us that the bidding was fair and above board…!

After sampling wines –courtesy of a generous benefactor – the gathering was in a good singing humour. There were enthusiastic and lusty renditions of traditional Carols , led by Songmaster Owen accompanied by guest pianist Luca Stamatescu. (Who would have guessed that Luca is just 14 years old).

President Bill in closing the evening, thanked David Jones & his Team, Peter Thomas as MC, and the Musicians for their contributions.

A judge's perspective - Children's Book Council Awards
Suzanne Thwaites

Suzanne Thwaites started her teaching career nearly forty years ago obtaining her post graduate librarian qualifications with honours in 1991 ( while raising a family of 3). She has worked as a trained teacher-librarian in Government, Catholic and Independent schools for over 15 years. She retired in February 2009 after heading up the junior resources centre at Ivanhoe Girls Grammar School.

Suzanne has a strong commitment to encouraging and fostering a love and appreciation of quality children’s literature in students, parents and staff.

The last two January’s she was a volunteer in Cambodia running workshops for teachers.

Suzanne is an active member of the Victorian Branch of the CBCA. She was a member of the Branch Executive for approximately 9 years. She was also on the Executive of the Dromkeen Society for 5 years and for a time its Vice President

Through seizing the opportunities to be involved in as many different aspects of children’s literature as possible, Suzanne has also written articles and books reviews for publications and participated in book reading groups..

As a consultant she has assisted with the compilation of reading lists for “Let’s Read 2000” and Books up front; investing in the value of reading;  and also been a consultant to authors and read manuscripts submitted for a “Supa Dooper” readers’ series.

Suzanne was the recipient of the prestigious  Dromkeen Librarians’ Award for 2000.

In March 2009 she was appointed for a two year term as a National judge from Victorian for the Children’s Book Council of Australia – Book of the Year Awards. This is a highly sought after position  The awards are given for Children’s Books ( books for readers up to the age of 18) of high literary merit and are much valued by writers/illustrators and publishers.

Care Report

Speaking to Denise Gibbs and she reported that her leg is improving, and she can see herself back playing tennis, in about April. She and Fred have just spent time with relations, in Adelaide.

Thank you to the Rotarians who have offered to participate in a roster to pick up Ben. Still short of 3 or 4 to complete the 12 months roster.

One of our members was telling us on the way out last night, that they had to loose 15 Kg before they could have an operation on a knee. What a challenge, with all our over indulgences at Christmas time. Will report on their success .... or otherwise! This could be sergeant material.

Great to have Wendy Leget with us at the Christmas function. Her first night out with us since she was so very sick, and she was looking good. Perfect Christmas present Wendy.  Well done.

Peter Thomas did a great job as MC last night and everyone had a happy night. Jim Cary looked lonely with no partner sitting with top brass at head table. No Leonie has not left him, just had an appointment in Sydney!  We missed you Leonie -- send him next time and you come to Rotary.

Understand one of our Rotarian's son is getting married in 2 months. They have had 2 wedding in last 12 months (one overseas, one at MCC, there was such a big crowd) so with all that practice, this one is going to be perfect. (Think they have a money tree in the back yard.)

Please advise of any one you know who is unwell so we may send them good wishes from our Club at Christmas time.

Keith

Thought for the week

The hardness of butter is directly proportional to the softness of bread.

( . . .  and you thought the editorial staff were bereft of philosophical ideas)
