Next Week
There is no meeting next week and the following week there will be a meeting held at Marysville and Alexandra. Contract Trevor Penry for details of the trip to Marysville and Alexandra by bus.

This week's meeting: Michael Moroney

HORSE TRAINER par excellence

Highly successful horse trainer Michael Moroney captured the meeting's attention as he told us he once had a dream about horses.

``I had a dream and my horse, BREW won the 2000 Melbourne cup by a length and a half,'' he said.  The horse did win much to the amazement of Moroney and others.

But his career as a premier horse trainer began long before that as a lad at age 16 in New Zealand.  Said Michael: “ My mother objected, but I joined a Stable anyway, starting work at 3.30am!  Under the tutelage of famous mentor O’Sullivan, I became his foreman”.

Then began two celebrated partnerships – first his marriage to Jane who was a New Zealand schoolteacher.  The second was a long lasting business relationship with his brother Paul.  After two decades as a leading trainer in New Zealand, Michael moved to Adelaide and then permanently to Victoria, establishing himself in well appointed stables in Flemington, and accepted by the VRC.

“I trained not only local and NZ horses, but also international horses from Japan, UK, Hong Kong, Ireland and more”, Michael added.

The partnership with brother Paul was profitable, as Paul had a good eye for a young as yet untried horse, buying them for a good price.  When the youngster under Michael’s hand became a winner, such a horse could be sold at a handsome profit.

Thanks Michael, for sharing your life as a Trainer with us, and giving us a glimpse into the amazing world of horses and racing.

Owen Tassicker.

Care Report

The saga of the Jones boy continues! Don has return to Portsea, still wheel chair operative, and when he gathers strength, will be returning to Epworth for another operation.. I suggested he was challenging Graham Brown's performance with his ankle reconstruction but I can now declare, Don is the winner. Regards to Deirdre who now has the unpaid nursing job.

Stan Hogg rang today to say he was home in St Kilda Road and felt he would be right for the Marysville trip. Good news Stan.

Shirley and Andrew Mitchell have returned from their 4 weeks extended honeymoon in Vietnam. They thoroughly enjoyed it, including a week with local people, in a remote village, sleeping, eating with them and working with them, to build an out-building. One of the pair was not so keen on sleeping on straw, on the ground, but found it a great experience and felt they did contribute to a building program.

Plant-a-tree - Grow a child

Many of us are aware of the Club’s contribution to the establishment of the Kinder+ fund within Foundation Boroondara – and the wonderful outcome it provides for disadvantaged kiddies in our local community.

Those of us who were able to attend a special ceremony on 7 October were privileged to hear about the first supporter of Kinder+  and in particular the Plant-a-Tree Grow-a-Child scheme. This novel idea whereby a contribution of as little as $100 can initiate a tree being planted in a local park or reserve to commemorate someone special, also provides vital funding to allow Kinder+ to operate.

The first contribution was made by PP Roy Boyce in the name of Margarette Gillies who was a tireless supporter of the Club through her work with PP Ted.

As an acknowledgement of Roy’s gesture – the Club made a significant commitment of $25,000 to Kinder+ enabling an entire year of applicants to Kinder+ to be guaranteed the support necessary to attend Kindergarten for their Children.

In recognition of this – Kinder+ arranged a special tree to be planted in Beckett Park for Roy Boyce where the event was celebrated by Ann Boyce, members of Roy’s family – together with representatives of Foundation Boroondara and a large number of Club members and partners.

Picture shows Ann Boyce and Members of the Family at the tree planting.

Following  Roy’s great example - your continued support of Kinder+ is welcome through the Plant-a-Tree Grow-a-Child program and details can be obtained from Hugh Trumble or by contacting Foundation Boroondara as follows:-
