Next Week

Ken Maxfield

Our speaker next week is Ken Maxfield who was Inducted into the Rotary Club of Forest Hill on  23 October 1978 and before that was a member of the Rotary Club of Gisborne from April 1980 to May 1987. He was president of the Gisborne club from 1982 to 1983 and District Governor's Group Representative for a year from from 1983.  He was a member of the Rotary Club of Flemington from May 1987 to August 1993 and has ben a member of the Rotary Club of North Balwyn since July 1993.

He has been a member of many district committees and has a great interest in The Rotary Foundation and Youth areas and this, he says, explains his passion for Rotary Camp Getaway.

He now works in his own business as a consultant in Credit Management. Between 1962 and 1993 he worked in and owned companies involved with import, wholesale, manufacture and retail in the watch, clock and jewellery industries.

THIS WEEK'S MEETING

Anne Catchpole at this week's meeting.

COTTAGE by the SEA

Anne Catchpole said enthusiastically that ``since 1890, Cottage by the Sea at Queenscliff has
provided short term relief care in a holiday environment to children and
families in need.''

Cottage by the Sea is an independent children¹s charity organization that
enjoys extensive community support and charity donations. It provides a
service to over 900 Victorian children every year. There is no other
organization of its kind that provides all year round relief care in
Victoria.

The aims of Cottage by the Sea were:

  • To improve the lives of children in need by providing short-term
    relief care in a holiday environment.
  • To provide an exciting beachside holiday for the children while giving
    the adult family members time out.

``Our children¹s program offers a wide range of activities provided in a safe and happy environment.  The children are accepted as
individuals with different needs, expectations and responses and are given
the opportunity to enjoy life simple pleasures, learn new skills and make
new friends'', she said.

 ``At the same time families - carers, grandparents, sole parents - are provided
with the opportunity of time out to cope with personal difficulties, crises
or just relief, secure in the knowledge that their children are being well
cared for and enjoying themselves,'' she added.

She emphasised that all children admitted for a weeks program, are referred
by their schools.  All staff are qualified and fully trained professionals.

We were all impressed by the vital enthusiasm Anne showed to her work with
Cottage by the Sea, and towards the family of staff.

Care Report

Our sympathies are extended to Peter Thomas and family on the passing of
Peter's Mother. The loss of one's Mother is a very sad occasion. Our
thoughts and prayers are with all your family Peter.
The funeral is on Friday at 2.30 at St Stephen Anglican Church, 383 High
Street Rd., Mount Waverley.

Wendy Le Get has finished her series of treatment and is progressively
building up her strength. She is able to walk round the block. Well done
Wendy.

Great to see Jim Kylie back, on a crutch, is more comfortable and hoping to
throw away crutch soon.

Both overseas and local travellers are returning which I guess signals the
improvement in the weather.Apologies if I miss anyone but will try and recall;

Hugh and Judy Trumble from Portugal
Julie Gray from Fiji.
Andrea & Hugh Rutter from the UK.
Ken and Isobel from Queensland

Going are Gavin and Mary Wayland to UK -- I guess to visit their son. This son had
promised to fly out, if that team I am not allowed to mention, got in the
Grand Final. Next year!

Geoff Hare is established in his new residence.
I have not heard how Carol
Imison
is progressing with her move.

A number of people have rung Don Jones and he has been very pleased to get
the calls. Is really feeling quite well but is totally bored with been shut
in Epworth. His phone number again is  9426 6991.

RELISH? WHY NOT?

At its September meeting, the Board of the Rotary Club of Balwyn agreed to release funds of $5,000 to project RELISH for this financial year. RELISH ?

Project RELISH is an initiative of the Rotary Club of St Kilda. It commenced in 2008 with the objective of producing a recipe book with recipes contributed by local restaurants and cafes. It was very successful and a high-quality book of 50+ recipes was produced and sold for $14.95  Proceeds from the sale of the book were donated to two charities which Rotary St Kilda identified – the Sacred Heart Mission and  Shelter-Box (a Rotary International organization)

The Rotary Club of St Kilda decided to build upon their success with Relish 2009. They approached a number of other clubs within District 9800 and have developed a sponsorship model which has significant benefits to any club which takes up the sponsorship.

To summarise the arrangement, a club agrees to

1.    source an additional 10 restaurants in their area,
2.    pay a sponsorship fee of $5,000 (there are different levels of sponsorship)
3.    nominate a charity to receive the proceeds from sales of the recipe book
4.    organize the sale of 1,000 recipe books at a RRP of $15.00 raising up to $15,000

The Rotary Clubs which have taken up sponsorship and their nominated charities are

Melbourne South           - Reclink and Water Wells (Cambodia)
Prahran                           - Prahran Mission
Malvern                            - Very Special Kids

HOW is Balwyn involved in Project Relish ?

Balwyn got involved after I did a make-up at St.Kilda Rotary in August. The product was clearly impressive and the 2010 Project was progressing well. I briefed David Harris , Community Services Director, about the project and he saw an immediate application. He had been trying to come up with a means of supporting FoodShare – the volunteer organization whose logo is Rescuing Food, Fighting Hunger.

The obvious link-up was to direct the proceeds from the sale of the Relish 2010 to FoodShare. A proposal was circulated amongst the Community Service Committee and approved for presentation to the Board who subsequently approved the grant of $5,000.

The Bottom Line

Community Service have solved the perennial problem which we all face at this time of year. What can I get as a Christmas present ?

Relish 2010 is the ideal present for all ages – “Good Food for a Good Cause”

It is not just a recipe book – it is also a restaurant guide as well. It is attractively priced at $15.00 and all proceeds go to FairShare. It will be available from late October.

More details on project RELISH are available at web-site www.relishrecipes.com.au

New Membership

Membership Campaign – 29.09.09

Let’s pose a question:             Why are we Rotarians?

Perhaps the answer embraces some of the following opportunities:

  • Fellowship & social activities;
  • Community service;
  • Great meeting program;
  • Helping the needy;
  • The delight of standing on the Market gate at 7.00 am in the dark, pouring rain freezing wind with Brownie for company;
  • The joy of seeing under privileged kids light up as they board the Box Hill mini train;
  • Sharing thoughts, ideas & friendships with like minded members.

I could go on.  But if any of the above ideas – or others – appeal to you as a Rotarian, now is the time to bring others into Rotary.

New members can be of any gender, race, colour, creed or political affiliation and preferably be younger than most of us.  They could even be our sons or daughters or their friends.  They could be someone who could change the world if only given the right opportunity.

It’s up to all of us to provide names and contact details of potential members to our membership team leaders, Trevor Penry or me.

DISASTER RELIEF

From D9800 RAWCS

Dear Fellow Rotarians,

You have all heard about the two tragic events these past few days in Samoa and Manilla. Those of you who attended the RAWCS Seminars at International House recently will recall the Clubs that had projects in these locations. Both Clubs - Rotary Club of Sunshine in Samoa and Rotary Club of Brighton Beach in The Philippines have been in contact with the Clubs they have been working with in both locations and have pleas for urgent assistance. While we know that the usual disaster aid agencies and Governments will be the first responders, the needs that always remain after the first rush of assistance passes, will need to be addressed.

The list below is the list of goods that Frank Dri has received from his Rotary contact in Samoa and this is an appeal to all Clubs to assist Sunshine meet these requests quickly.

A similar request exists for the flood victims in Manilla and Ruth Carlos is seeking many of the same goods.

If you are able to assist either or both with any of the articles from this list, please let Frank and Ruth know and arrange to get the goods to the DIK store - your DIK store as soon as you can. Please use the list as the guide to the items required - this is not a general appeal for anything you have that is surplus to your needs. It is a very specific list of items requested. If you have any queries in this regard please refer them to Frank on 0438117 810 or Ruth on 0407 566 079.

Sunshine are arranging for a container of goods to be assembled as soon as they can and Brighton Beach is looking to arrange separate transport. It will also be helpful if you have goods to let Bill Dagg know by an email so that an appropriate record of your donations can be assembled. The DIK store is at 400 Sommerville Road West Footscray and Bill's contact number is 0425 741 045. The store is open from 9am to 3pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Rotarians are good at this sort of appeal - lets show everyone that our compassion and caring is still strong.

Cheers,

Bob Glindemann
District 9800 RAWCS Chair
