Next Week

22 Sep 09 - Dredging Port Phillip . . .   Jan de Jonge
There will also be a report on Project China Doctor

Jan de Jonge was born in Stadskanaal (Holland) but moved to Rotterdam at the age of  seven. His working life has evolved very much around the shipping industry.

From 1961 till 1964 he worked as a ship’s agent, called waterclerk,  for a large agency and shipping company and after 2 years of “life” in the army, he then joined Hempel’s Marine Paints in 1966 where he became Sales Manager Foreign ships.

In 1976 he was appointed General Manager of Hempel Curacao  (Caribbean) which is just off the coast of Venezuela and was responsible for a vast area in Central America.

He later moved to Australia in 1979 taking up the function of Managing Director with the idea to serve a three year contract that turned into 26 years. He stayed with the company 39 years until his retirement at the beginning of 2005.

Hempel (Australia) Pty Ltd is part of the Hempel Group of Companies with its head office in Copenhagen, Denmark. The Australian arm grew rapidly during the 80’s and 90’s and they have offices and warehouses located in all 4 major Australian cities and  New Zealand.. Paint production was halted in 1990 and the company changed to fully importing the paints, mainly from Singapore and Indonesia.

The company is well known in the marine industry - the world's second biggest in its field - and is also a world leader in yacht paints and container coatings.

With Jan’s knowledge of the local marine industry, he will address us today with a talk about the controversial dredging scenario in Port Phillip Bay.

This week's meeting

THE FOUR WAY TEST PUBLIC SPEAKING CONTEST.

In this competition, students from years 10 & 11are required to speak on any subject that they feel is current, interesting  or important.  Their speech must be based on the application of Rotary’s Four Way Test, with the principles of the Four Way Test running clearly through the entire speech.  The competition was open to schools in the City of Boroondara.

Peter Catterson was one of a team of 18 boys aged about 16 from Xavier College who participated in the Relay for Life 2009.  Such relay events which occur all over Australia, are not-for-profit campaigns which benefit Cancer Research, Prevention and Patients.  Said Peter: “This Event benefits everyone concerned; the participants who enjoy the challenge of this outdoor event, and the Cancer Research Institutes who receive the cash proceeds”.  We learned from Peter that the Hawthorn track was wet and cold, making it strenuous going.  “One of our chaps, ‘Woodsy’ walked 14 hours straight!”, Peter added.  ‘The Relay for Life event builds goodwill all around, and friendships which will last for many years.  So who will you Relay for?” Peter challenged us.

Prerna Diksah “The truth is that women who comprise 70% of the world’s poorest people, are so because they lack education,” Prerna, who is from Fintona Girls School, commenced.  “International efforts to provide education to women in the poorest countries will result in a fairer world” she added.  Remarking that noble individuals can make a difference, Perna cited the case of a 28 year old woman ‘Muktami’ in a 3rd world country, who although she had been violated and disgraced in front of her village and was expected to commit suicide, nevertheless went on to build no less than three schools for girls.  “This will be beneficial to all concerned” she concluded.

Markos Hasiotos  “I have a dream of closing a world wide fast food chain” began Markos who is from Trinity College. This chain concealed the truth about their products – which actually led to cancer & ill-health, he claimed.

``They do not tell the truth in their Nutritional Guide.  There are a large number fast food addicts who are seduced by glamorous advertising.
``But in the sense that their products are relatively cheap, they are being fair on the community,'' he said.

It was unfair, however, that the chain used lands from poor countries to grow products and then took the products from the land back to the affluent countries. Packaging for their products took some 800 square miles of cultivation, he told the meeting.

Since the fast food chain provides steady employment and steady wages to its employees, this was beneficial to those concerned. The food chain funds a not-for-profit series of homes of respite for troubled and chronically ailing children thereby building goodwill among the children and their families.

After lenghty adjudication, the judges awarded first prize to Markos Hasiotos, second to Peter Catterson and third to Prema Diksah. First prize was $3000 to the school and a book voucher from co-sponsor Dymocks in Camberwell for $300, second was $2000 to the school and a $200 book voucher and third prize was $1000 to the school and a $100 book voucher.

Owen Tassicker.

Care Report

It is with regret that we learned of the passing of Judy Hogg, late wife of Stan Hogg. Judy has been quite ill for a number of years and Stan has been faithfully attentive to her needs.

Stan has been a Rotary member of Balwyn for 33 years, (though his duty as Judge took him away for periods), and Judy was always a friendly participant in his Rotary activity and made many friends. Judy was also a community worker at Camcare where a number of our partners assisted.

The Hogg's had three daughters, Kathy, Christine, Robyn, a son in law, and 5 grandchildren.

To them all we extend our sincere sympathies. Peace be with Judy --  and all the Hogg family.

The funeral will be at St.John's, Cnr. Toorak and Orrong Rd Toorak at 10AM Monday morning the 21st September. It would be great to see representatives of our Club present.

Don Jones continues his now 4 weeks stay, reluctantly, in Epworth Hospital. He has only had one operation on his leg and still has two to go. First op must heal before next. He is very frustrated and I am sure would appreciate a visit or phone call. Understand Prez Bill (El Bill) has visited which Don appreciated.

Another patient President Bill has been supporting , actually the other half of the 'Bill and Ben' show, is BEN. Ben Bradbury. Our Ben was admitted three weeks ago, with a heart problem, and after a number of tests  it was decided he should have a pacemaker fitted. They were not sure how it was working and if an implant would overcome the original problem. Because of this I had instructions to tell no one (other than President Bill) as he had to be kept very quiet.

Good news is he has moved from the hospital at weekend to Cannault in Yarrbat Ave. Not sure how long he will be here but he would like visitors. He looks good but there could be a few problems with re-establishing himself in Belmore Rd. We wish he and daughter Carol ever success in the process.

Other good news relates to Wendy Leget. Wendy is back home and the death threatening sudden ill has been identified and she is participating in a program to over come it. She is very bright and very positive. Understand Garry has a steep learning curve in domesticity.

Wendy we are all pleased to hear of your rapid progress. You had us all worried for a while.

Saw Doug McLaughlin in action on Saturday and through negotiation moved a final bidder's offer up 30% and clichéd the sale. All pending sellers in the area (and of course seller) congratulate you Doug. Great to see him looking so well.

Hugh and Anthea Rutter are off to the Cotswolds, though I don't know where they can sail their boat there! Hope the 'Rotary program' is organised and in good hands! Have a wonderful holiday, and reunion with family.

Keith

Rotary Conference Perth

Fellow Rotarians,

I am sending this e-mail to those members who have indicated they will be definitely attending the Conference ( 6members), to those who are maybes ( 8 members), and to  many others who are sometimes attend conferences but who have not responded to me ( and you know who you are) and could be interested in attending. Usually we have 25-30 attendees.

The purpose of this e-mail is to update you on the current position.

1 Registration forms should be circulated on-line this week. If you are going to attend you will have to make a decision which function who wish to attend on the Saturday night, either a cruise on the Swan River or a black tie formal dinner at Government House which is restricted to the first 350 who wish to attend.

2 Therefore is will be imperative to register immediately if you wish to attend the formal dinner, and this seems to be the preference of those who are committed to attending.

3 You will be responsible for making your own travel arrangements to and from the Conference and it appears nearly everyone will be extending there stay in WA to explore the state.

4 I have reserved 15 rooms at the Parmelia Hilton Hotel which is some 100 metres from the Conference Centre and is in the middle range of costs, however I lose the reservation after the 15th November. Garry Le Get tells me the Conference Centre and surrounds are most impressive.

5 I will notify you the minute I know the registration forms are available.

6 I will be sending a reminder to every member of the Club via the webmaster, however this note is to the chosen few.

7 Below is probably all the information you require to make your decision however if you need further assistance please contact me.

8 If you have not already done so please let me know your intentions ASAP either, yes, no or maybe.

Thanks and regards,

Bob Batrouney

KINDERGARTEN KIDS DELIGHTED BY MINI-RAILWAY ADVENTURE

On Wednesday 26 August a very unique excursion for over 50 children from two of Ardoch’s partner kindergartens was held at the Box Hill Miniature Railway.  Thanks to Balwyn rotary, BW Capital and Ardoch we managed to facilitate a fantastic day (which took 10 months to plan and prepare for!). Look out for Ardoch publications in the future for some fabulous photos! Thanks to Steve (Lambert) at BW Capital and Balwyn Rotary for sponsorship and volunteering support and also to Mrs. Jan de Kretzer for coming along on the day to help us make education a reality!
