Rotary Four Way Test

2009 Youth Public Speaking Competition

Tuesday 15 September 2009

The Rotary Youth Public Speaking Competition was initiated 5 years by the Rotary Club of Balwyn. Participants are Year 10 and 11 students attending schools within the City of Boroondara. The subject of the speech can be anything that the contestant feels is current, interesting or important. However it must be based on the application of Rotary’s Four Way Test.

The Grand Final of this competition will be held on Tuesday 15 September 2009.

Please bring your partners and members of your family. As we are expecting a large number for the dinner we need to have an indication of the numbers. Please let us know numbers well before the night.

This week's meeting

BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS: BEAU MONDE

It was a pleasant evening, with lots of bonhomie and chatter at the Beau Monde of Doncaster.  It was a new venue for us.  Tastefully decorated and with a melodious ( and subdued!) band for background music, it was ideal for our birthday celebrations.  President Bill and First Lady Julie were in good form.  Thanks to Judith Lahey for her choice of venue.

Several notable guests added to the quality of the evening.  Of course it was a joy to welcome back from Port Douglas, our PP Andrew Mitchell and his wife Shirley.  Especially, we were pleased to have with us, Shirley’s daughter Anna Schumann (right) with husband Sanjeev Narin.  Anna, as some of us will remember, was a Rotary Peace Scholar of 2007. Now as a staffer to the University of North Carolina, Anna spoke to us of her plans for work amongst the most impoverished of communities around the world.

Our own Indigenous Scholar of 2007, Karen Hill, in preparation for the World Triathalon Contest, spoke to us. She was awarded a special ‘trophy’ from President Bill in anticipation of a great performance later in the week. (I suspect both Bob Batrouney and Peter Blundell had a mischievous hand in the choice of the ‘trophy’!) Karen is now in Queensland in final preparations for the World Contest.

Original sketches by our multi-talented President Bill, donated to the Club, were sold off during a brisk auction.  Under the eagle eye of our own Auctioneer Doug McLauchlan, these unique sketches fetched a good price.

Another pleasant event – thanks to all who managed & compered.  What a joy to belong to such a lively club as RC Balwyn!

Care Report

Wendy Le Get is on all our minds at this time. The pneumonia that took her to hospital - in Garry's description -- was only an opportunistic invader and not the real problem. Wendy regrettably has two serious conditions and for medicos amongst us 'B-Cell_chronic_lymphocytic leukaemia and Cold Agglutinin Disease'. The control treatment has started. Its only the second case the hospital has had this year. Very rare.

Wendy we all have you in our thought and prayers supporting you and carer Garry at this very difficult time. Garry if there is any way any of us can help -- we are as far as phone.

Don Jones is also in the Epworth chain, and has had one successful operation on the leg but has two more to go. He has every reason to be frustrated. Its a long haul situation and I'm sure he would like a phone call or visit if you are anywhere near Epworth Richmond.

Talking to Stan Hogg he advised his dear wife Judy is not very well, and he spends a lot of time at her side. Our thoughts are with you both, Stan.

Immediate Past President Andrew and wife Shirley have returned from Port Douglas and joined us last night. Their wedding was celebrated in the beautiful multi denominational St Mary's Church on the 'green' overlooking the Port Douglas harbour.  Quite a place to confirm vows.

Beverley and Lindsay Jones didn't stay home long from their trip round outback western Queensland, they are now flying to Europe for a tour in that part of world.

Carol Imison has 6 days to go and she will be retiring from work. For some reason she is very happy!!

Carol we all wish you e very satisfing and happy reirement.

Its also all happening in the McQualter family since their return home. They have just excitedly announced the birth of their first grandchild. Congratulations.

Keith
