STEM CELL RESEARCH OFFERS HOPE

Stem cell research offers hope to sufferers from a variety of ailments and research is widening the fields in which it will be useful. Dr. Caroline Gargett will talk on this controversial and exciting field of medical research next wek at Balwyn Rotary Club. The ability of these cells to be directed to repair or bridge medical problems seems to widen weekly with the intensity of the research. The controversy seems to come from their source.

WHERE ON EARTH BUT PERTH

The Perth Conference Organising Committee is launching our promotion and marketing for next year's Perth District Conference.
The following information is provided for members of 9800 and their partners. We would appreciate if you could circulate this informatioon to every Rotary member of your club as well as their partners.

Come and visit Perth in March 2010

Perth is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful cities in Australia. Perth is located on the banks of the magnificent Swan River with the river valley to the east, Fremantle and the beaches to the west and Margaret River and the south east region to its south.

South west Western Australia is one of Australia's most popular tourist areas and we encourage rotarians to adda few days either before or after the conference to take in the sights of this wonderful area

The main conference sessions will begin at 0900 on Friday 5 March 2010 and will finish at lunchtime on Sunday 7 March 2010. The conference sessions will be held in the award winning Perth Convention Exhibition centre 500 metres from the Perth CBD on the banks of the Swan River.  Built in 2005, the centre is considered one of the countrry';s best.

More details of the conference will be individually emailed.

Meeting Forum

Grantham Beeston, Treasurer, fired the opening salvo continuing “the treasurer has to maintain the Club’s finances for two streams – the Operations of the Club being the first.  The second stream being monies received from the Market available for Grants, that is, Projects external to RC Balwyn” .

Members’ yearly subscriptions covered the costs of running the Club.
The RCB is able to make large grants to the Community and also to projects far away from our shores.  ``For this we acknowledge the large contribution from the Market, its Directors and Management,'' he said..

As to our Grants, we anticipate a net income from the Market of  $500,000 this coming year.  Of this, $140,000 is passed on to the City of Boroondara Community Grants Fund for distribution to worthy causes within the Shire.  In this regard, it must be emphasised that RCB has members on the Shire’s Grants Fund.

Previous Boards have committed to $40,000 to our Educational Foundation over four years.  The remaining $320,000 is available for the different Avenues of Service as the Board approves.

Grantham concluded:  “Directors will be advised of the proposed allocation shortly.

Gavin Wayland, Education Foundation, gave us an overview of the Trust which provides funds for scholarships, bursaries and prizes.

Awards are made to Australian citizens or permanent residents to promote their education either in Australia or at an overseas institution.  An award may be to an individual or to a group.

The Trust has the flexibility to receive funds either from our own RCB Sunday Market, or from other individuals or charitable institutions, or Government agencies.  As such, the donations are tax deductible.

Our most prominent examples are the tertiary scholarships already awarded to Indigenous or Torres Strait Islanders.

Gavin said that “new projects such as Kindergarten Education, Trade Training, or Handicapped Children’s Programmes can be incorporated in the future.

Trevor Penry, Membership Development said “we are a strong club with 90 members, the 4th largest in our District 9800, but we cannot rest on our laurels.  We need to continue to induct new members.

``Once, there were proud, dominant Rotary Clubs in our area, but who, having  neglected recruitment, are now down to 20 members.  This won’t happen on my watch Trevor assured us.  ``Gary Le Get, Gavin Wayland and I will develop a strong Membership Development Program this year,” he added.

``If we market Rotary appropriately and honestly, we shall attract both older retired  members as well as younger potential members.  We could think about a Central Balwyn Rotary Breakfast Club based upon Whitehorse Road Traders.

“When Pres Bill hands over to PE Ken, it is my goal to have more than 110 members in RC Balwyn,'' he said.

Mark Caldwell, Vocational Services:

Boroondara Literary Awards are a joint activity of RC Balwyn, Leader Newspapers and the City of Boroondara.  There are two main categories, Young Writers and Open Short Story.  There are sections for poetry and prose for secondary school students, in years 7-9 and 10-11.  Entries are judged by successful professionals who are widely recognised for their work in literature.

The Four Way Speaking Contest is for students in schools in the City of Boroondara.  Speakers must relate their subject to the Rotary 4 Way Test.  Finals are held at RC Balwyn on a regular Tuesday night.  This year, the event was cancelled due to sparse interest on the part of state schools.  The event is now subject to review as to its viability.

Rotary Indigenous Australian Tertiary Scholarship was introduced in 2005, Rotary’s centenary year.  This valuable scholarship is worth $20,000 per annum for four years.  With financial support from the Victorian Department of Education, the scholarship is now offered annually.  This Programme is under the stewardship of Peter Blundell and Bob Batrouney.

Police Mentoring Program provides police leaders with a development opportunity to gain a better understanding of the different organisational cultures within the State.  Our Mentor this year is Andrew Mitchell.

My Vocation – Something New!  During the year, Members will be invited to speak on changes taking place in their Vocations.  Our first speaker will be Michael Dobson who will speak on his experiences as an air traffic controller in Oman.

Peter Frueh, International Service spoke on the objectives for this year.

Complete one Matching Grant Project with RC Balwyn as initiator.

In aid of Rotary Foundation, increase Centurian Club Membership

Nominate an Ambassadorial  or World Peace Scholar .

Move RC Balwyn’s funding to Rotary Liaison Officer in East Timor to a more equitable basis.

Devise and maintain a record of current International Projects, by means of a specially designed spread sheet

Care Report

Wecome home to Don Kerr after his initiation into the Zipper Club. He actually offered his membership join fee to the distinguished and expensive Zipper Club (Heart surgery for the uninitiated). `Feel Well' - and looking well, too, Don.

Doug McLauchlan is also back home and great ot have his bright and enthusiastic company. Look forward to seeing you next week Doug.

Paul Mulqueen back after a stressful two weeks. Paul, we were all impressed with your wonderful family demeanour and strength over this very stressful period. We all feltl Edith;s, the family and your pain.

News from Armidale New South Wales breakfast - or certainly AM - Rotary Club and a new member Past President Barbara Paton ex RCB. Our fist Lady President, yes, Barbara, has affiliated with Rotary joining the Armidalte AM Club. (Sounds as if she is very busy with the new job with that selection of a club at that time.)

After 33 years of standing at the market gate, our almost centenarian (four years short) Ben Bradbury has handed in his cash bag. Well deserved, he was presented with a certificate of service. A challenge for anyone to match his period of service. Very well done Ben. We are proud to have you as a membver. Transport will always be available - no excuses accepted.

Norman Taralrud-Bay gave us all a pleasant surprise by buying the fist round of drinks for all the club. Why, we all asked? Not until the meeting did we hear that he now qualifies for his `seniors' card. Much to young, says I. Congratulations and very HAPPY BIRTHDAY. May you have many many more. Hope we are all there for your next 10 year celebration.

Jaon and I are off to Queensland and hope that the Scot, Hamish Macmillan, will now take over from the Irish and confuse you even more than I have. I think that this is something Irisih can do better thabn Scots - confuse people.

Keith

Group Study Exchange

Group Study Exchange to Spain in May 2010
Our District 9800 is conducting a Group Study Exchange with District 2203 in Spain. This district is in Valencia region on the south east coast of Spain. A leader and four members will be going. The Australian team departs on 30th April and returns on 31 May 2010. The team leader can be an experienced Rotary member. Team members must be 25 to 40 years of age, employed full time in a vocation they intend to remain in upon return, must live and work in District 9800 and cannot be the son/daughter/grandchild of a living Rotarian. Think about employees, work colleagues or volunteers you know who would be great ambassadors for their country and potential Rotarians.

Team leader nominations close on 17th July (this Friday) and team member nominations close 24th July (next Friday week) so please contact Peter Frueh on 03 9888 1196 or mobile 0438 690 850 or at peter.frueh@gmail.com as soon as possible if you are interested or have someone to nominate. There will be an opportunity to host the inbound Spanish GSE team when they are in Australia 6 Feb to 10 Mar 2010 (we will be asking for hosts later in the year).
