Bushfire Relief

In response to the bushfire catastrophy, the Rotary Club of Balwyn pledged $100,000 for people and organizations that had suffered as a result of the fires. This pledge was made in February very soon after the fires and much of the money has now been allocated and distributed.

Some of this work has been done in association with the Rotary Club of Alexandra who are very close to the disaster and in a great position to provide help where it is really needed. We are very grateful for this association and thank them for their wonderful work.

Iraq Issues

In May, the US Consul General, Michael Thurston came to speak at a club dinner meeting. He was a genuinely interesting man who covered a lot of ground with a particular focus on his recent experience leading a Reconstruction Team in Iraq. Click here for more detail about his fascinating talk.

Welcome to our world

The Rotary Club of Balwyn is a very active club of more than 90 male & female members in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne, Australia. We meet for dinner every Tuesday at the Eastern Golf Club in Doncaster Road, Doncaster. Click here for details.

Rotary is an organization of "service clubs" which means that we work continually to help others in need. We support a huge range of projects at all levels from local community through Australian national to international. Since the 1970's, we have raised and donated more than $8,500,000 for community and humanitarian causes.

The work of our club is supported by our most prominent activity, the famous Sunday Market in Camberwell. We have been operating this market since 1976. All of these funds have been used for charitable purposes in support of people and organizations within our own community, across Australia and overseas. The causes we support range from homelessness, drought affected communities and medical research to disaster relief both in Australia and overseas.

Beyond those activities, we also provide scholarships for aboriginal university students, support participants at the National Youth Science Forum, Rotary youth enrichment and youth leadership programs.

We enjoy an interesting guest speaker on most meeting nights. The range of speakers who have visited our club meetings is wide and varied and has included:

  • John Silvester, the well known crime journalist & co-author of the "Underbelly" books & TV programs.
  • Jeff Kennett, past Premier of Victoria & champion of the "Beyond Blue" depression initiative.
  • Barry Jones, one time quiz champion, polititian & elder statesman of the Labor Party

Rotary is an amazing international organization that does extraordinary work around the world & provides enormous pleasure and satisfaction to those who belong. This website contains much that will interest people who want to find out more about Rotary and also those who are interested in becoming a member of Rotary.
